SAN FRANCISCO — Led by a newcomer and backed by veterans, the Saint Mary’s golf team kicked off its 2016-17 fall season Monday by sitting in second place through the first two rounds of the USF Olympic Intercollegiate at the famous Olympic Club in San Francisco.
The Gaels sit seven strokes back of team leader BYU, which finished even on the day. The defending West Coast Conference champion Saint Mary’s leads fellow WCC members San Francisco (t-4th, +13), Santa Clara (t-9th, +20), Loyola Marymount (11th, +21) and San Diego (12th, +26).
Freshman Eduardo Carrete carded an even 142 through two rounds on the par-71 course in his collegiate debut.
