SAN DIEGO — The Saint Mary’s baseball team made sure it was heard loud and clear Sunday as it made a big statement with nine runs on 19 hits en route to a 9-1 win at Fowler Park over preseason West Coast Conference favorite San Diego, clinching its first series win at the Toreros in 22 years.
The Gaels (11-7, 2-1 WCC) last won a series at San Diego (12-10, 1-2 WCC) in 1994 when they took two of three in March to also open their WCC slate then. The Gaels were picked to finish in a tie for third this season in the WCC Preseason Poll, while the defending champion Toreros earned six first-place votes as the favorite.
