MALIBU, Calif. — A veteran and a rookie combined Friday to give the Saint Mary's baseball team an important series-opening win, as Johnny York got back on track with a quality start and Ken Waldichuk closed it out to beat Pepperdine 3-0 in the opener of a key West Coast Conference series at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
York (5-3) worked around early trouble to keep the Waves (19-28, 7-15 WCC) scoreless in his longest outing since April 14. The senior entered Friday having gone 0-1 with an 8.76 ERA in his last three starts following his complete game shutout of Loyola Marymount, all not lasting longer than 4 1/3 innings.
