PHOENIX — The Saint Mary’s baseball team showed patience and poise Friday in its opening game at the Grand Canyon University Classic, drawing its most walks in at least 18 years and scoring 15 runs to beat Central Michigan 15-4 at Brazell Stadium.
Saint Mary’s (5-1) drew 15 walks from the Chippewas (0-5) Friday, the most in any game going back to records through the 1999 season. The Gaels loaded the bases four times Friday and scored runs in six innings, including two or more in four different frames. Every Gaels starter reached base at least once as the team racked up 12 hits to go with its 17 free passes (15 walks, two hit-by-pitch).
