SEATTLE — The Saint Mary’s baseball team took an early lead and held on late Friday, winning its eighth series opener of the year in beating Pac-12 Conference member Washington 5-3 at Husky Ballpark.

The Gaels (22-12) stayed undefeated on Fridays (9-0) and remained unbeaten (10-0) when junior right-hander Corbin Burnes (6-0) starts on the mound. Burnes threw seven innings in the victory, striking out five and allowing two runs on four hits. Saint Mary’s gave Burnes a three-run lead through the fourth inning, but a two-run double by Jackson Thoreson in the seventh proved crucial as Washington (19-14) mounted a late comeback.
