Motta wins NBA coaching lifetime achievement award (AFP)

Cleveland (AFP) - Dick Motta, who spent 25 seasons coaching the NBA without having played basketball, was named Tuesday as winner of the National Basketball Coaches Association Lifetime Achievement Award.

The 83-year-old former NBA coach won his only league crown with the Washington Bullets in 1978, finishing with a record of 935-1,017 in regular season games and 56-70 in playoff games from 1968 to 1997.

"To win this award from my peers, my fellow coaches, is an honor and very much appreciated," Motta said.

Motta spent six years coaching at Weber State University before taking charge of the Chicago Bulls in 1968, making the playoffs six times in eight seasons before joining Washington for four seasons.
