The Kings are getting set to make DeMarcus Cousins the highest paid player in franchise history. According to a report by Comcast’s James Ham, the Kings will be offering Cousins a max extension this summer (no surprise) but more importantly, Cousins intends to accept the offer and remain with the Kings rather than test Free Agency. The new deal would keep Cousins in a Kings uniform through the 2022-23 season and will likely total above $200 million in total.
Cousins has repeatedly stated that he wants to remain in Sacramento for the long haul, but with the franchise in continued disarray (the team has still not managed to win more than 33 games in Cousins’ seven seasons), free agency had to look a little tempting, especially when there wasn’t much more financial incentive for him to stay in Sacramento.
