The NBA offseason is officially here, although the Sacramento Kings have already focused on the offseason for several weeks now. The Kings have a few notable needs and enough cap space to be in the mix for several of the bigger names this offseason. The Kings could try to land another star or a few role role players, but they won't land every player they want.
We're disregarding the Kings’ own free agents (like Rajon Rondo and Seth Curry) and are instead focusing on players the Kings could sign away from other teams. This isn't every player Sacramento will have at least some interest in, but it's the ones who should be near the top of the list. With that in mind, here are five free agents the Kings will target this offseason.
5. Kevin Martin
Martin is not the player he once was, that's for sure. The 33-year-old is in the final stages of his career, so perhaps a return to the team that drafted him is in the cards. The Kings need SG help, especially if Seth Curry leaves and/or Ben McLemore is traded. While Martin isn't that different than Marco Belinelli, Martin should be cheap.
4. Brandon Jennings
If the Kings lose PG Rajon Rondo, they'll need a new one. Darren Collison's future is murky after being charged with with domestic violence, and the Kings have no other options at PG. Jennings isn't the best option, but he's better than the likes of Deron Williams or Jeremy Lin. Jennings might not be the best fir, but he would help the Kings if Rondo leaves and Sacramento doesn't land a PG in the draft.
3. Evan Fournier
As mentioned above, the Kings really need help at SG. So why not throw a bunch of money at Fournier, a restricted free agent. He’s just 23 years old and is a quality shooter. He might not be be a max-player, although the Kings would need to give him a lot for the Magic to not match. The Kings must find a new starter at SG, and unless Buddy Hield falls to No. 8 in the draft, it's going to have to come in free agency.
2. Ryan Anderson
The Sacramento native could return this offseason. The Kings have a few talented bigs like Cousins and Willie Cauley-Stein already on the roster, but they lack a true stretch four. That's exactly what Anderson is and he'd be a perfect fit. But after averaging 17 points per game last year, Anderson will be highly coveted. The Kings have a real shot at landing Anderson, especially since returning to Sacramento would be easier on his family, but the Kings will have plenty of competition for him.
1. Mike Conley
Conley is the clear top free agent in a less-than-stellar PG market, meaning plenty of teams will be after him. The Kings will want Rajon Rondo back, but they're at least going to look at Conley. The presence of Dave Joerger, the former Memphis head coach, could help the Kings, but this is still a long shot. Still, the Kings will make an effort to sign Conley. A pick and roll combo of DeMarcus Cousins and Conley would be deadly.
