Monday was a big day for the Rutgers men’s basketball team. Hours before tipping off against Maryland, they moved up the national rankings two spots to no. 19, falling into the AP Poll Top 20 for the first time since 1979. Soon after, they moved up to no. 17 in the Coaches Poll. On the court, Rutgers beat Maryland on the road for the first time ever as Big Ten foes and for only the second time ever, the last coming in 1941. The victory meant the Scarlet Knights started Big Ten play with a 1-0 record for the first time since joining the league in 2014.
