Late in the fourth quarter of Buffalo’s 42-13 destruction of the Scarlet Knights, Victor E. Bull sauntered over to the Rutgers Cannon Crew and began to taunt the Revolutionary War re-enactors. Mr. Bull, the blue mascot for the State University of New York’s Buffalo campus, pointed mockingly at the artillerymen while a cheerleader waved the large Buffalo flag overhead and some 200 Buffalo faithful chanted “Fire the cannon!” following their team’s sixth and final touchdown.
It was only one of many humiliations suffered by the Rutgers football program and the handful of fans who watched the stampede at HighPoint.
