By announcing a 2019 non-conference football game against Liberty, Rutgers reignited the discussion of how to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the first college football game.
Though casual discussions took place before Rutgers underwent a 2015 athletics regime change, NJ Advance Media reported that the schools appear to share a mutual lack of interest in resuming the football series last played in 1980 -- before Rutgers made the climb to major independent, Big East and ultimately Big Ten member -- for a variety of reasons from player safety to competitiveness to NCAA rules.
