The scope of women’s basketball has greatly expanded over the past three decades, but Rutgers University is taking time during their January 29 game against Northwestern to recognize a pair of great Scarlet Knights teams of the past. At halftime of that contest at the Rutgers Athletic Center, the 1982 and 1987 squads will be duly recognized for their respective accomplishments.
In 1982, the Rutgers women put together a 25-7 record and ended up winning the Division I AIAW national championship by defeating the Texas Longhorns by an 83-77 score. Five years later, the 1987 team ended up winning the Atlantic 10 Conference before reaching the Elite Eight and finishing with a 30-3 mark.
