Rutgers’ Heisman Trophy candidate, lax All-American Bill Austin dies at 78

Bill Austin, who came closer to winning the Heisman Trophy than any player in Rutgers football history, died last week at the age of 78, the school’s athletics department announced Thursday.

Austin starred in both football and lacrosse on the Banks from 1956-1959.

As a senior on the gridiron in 1958, Austin finished with 757 yards and 15 touchdowns in eight games and led Rutgers to an 7-0 start and an 8-1 record.
