Rutgers coach Chris Ash focused on finding right assistants, not quick hires

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Every decision Chris Ash has made since being hired as Rutgers' head coach on Dec. 5 has been with the big picture in mind.

That's why Ash doesn't think anything has been lost by splitting his time between Rutgers and Ohio State, where he will remain as defensive coordinator through the Buckeyes' bowl game on Jan. 1. And that long-range view is why Ash isn't concerned that he has filled only two of his nine full-time assistant spots — offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer and special teams coordinator Vince Okruch — in his first two weeks at Rutgers.
