In his first three years as head coach at Rutgers, Kyle Flood had a resolute approach to naming a starting quarterback.
Cynics may say Flood's philosophy essentially was to name Gary Nova the starting quarterback and ignore all alternatives. Put more diplomatically, Flood favored picking a quarterback and sticking with him, although Nova was benched for the final three games of the 2013 season.
The quarterback competition between Chris Laviano and Hayden Rettig forced Flood to rethink his approach. The quarterbacks began battling for the starting job in spring practice and a winner wasn't determined until Monday, when Flood named Laviano the starter for Saturday's game against Washington State.
