Purdue fires Darrell Hazell, former Rutgers assistant and Cinnaminson native

The Big Ten has its first coaching casualty of 2016 after Purdue fired Darrell Hazell on Sunday in the middle of his fourth season.

The 52-year-old Hazell is a 1982 graduate of Cinnaminson High School who began his coaching career in 1986. In 2001, the South Jersey native returned home to be Rutgers wide receivers coach Greg Schiano's first staff.

Hazell finished 9-33 at Purdue, never winning more than three games in a season. He was on the hot seat at the end of last season but appeared to be saved by a contract that runs through 2018 and assures the fired coach of a $4.
