One of the first small sources of hope that Eric LeGrand received after suffering a paralyzing spinal cord injury while playing for Rutgers in 2010 came from the title of a book sent to him by a former NFL player.
The biography "Rise and Walk: The Trial and Triumph of Dennis Byrd" tells the story of how the former New York Jet overcame a broken neck suffered in a 1992 game to eventually walk back onto the field as an honorary team captain.
Former Penn State star Adam Taliaferro has a similar story to Byrd's -- and LeGrand's goal is to finish his life-altering tackle by walking from the field to the sideline.
