Norries Wilson as Rutgers head coach: First African-American, third interim since WWII

PISCATAWAY Just how rare is it for Rutgers to have an interim head coach?

Norries Wilson, who will coach Saturday’s game at Penn State in place of the suspended Kyle Flood, is just the third person to hold the title at Rutgers since World War II.

Of greater historical significance, Wilson will be the first African-American to act as head coach at Rutgers.

Rutgers has had 29 head coaches — not including interim head coaches — dating back to William A. Reynolds in 1891.
