Maryland fired head coach D.J. Durkin on Wednesday, bowing to tremendous public outrage and political pressure after he was reinstated a day earlier from a season-long leave following the death of player Jordan McNair this past summer and allegations he oversaw a "toxic" program.

The Terps will now be on the market for a permanent coach in December - and that hire will be of interest to Rutgers, considering it will be a new start for its closest Big Ten rival.
