With scorching heat expected to give way to scattered thunderstorms during weekend play at the PGA Championship, a Rutgers-developed product will be put to the test at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield.
Baltusrol relies on 10 varieties of turfgrasses developed by Rutgers at its Center for Turfgrass Science. The list includes several types of perennial ryegrass, tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass and creeping bentgrass.
While the center is celebrating its 25-year anniversary, Rutgers' track record for breeding and cultivating turfgrasses dates back to pioneers in the field in 1940 with a modernization of the program in 1962, according to Rutgers Today.
