How much each Big Ten football team spends on recruiting: Is big money getting big results?

Because there is big revenue in winning in college sports, there is big money spent in recruiting.

Coaches salaries often are discussed as a big expense for an athletics department, but even the best college coaches need to have the right players in order to work their magic.

The NCAA requires schools to report recruiting expenditures individualized by sport on its annual summary of revenues and expenses.

How is the total determined so precisely? Here's what costs are included, according to the report:
  • Lodging for prospective student-athletes and institutional personnel on official and unofficial visits
  • Meals for prospective student-athletes and institutional personnel on official and unofficial visits
  • Telephone call charges, postage and such
  • Transportation: Value of use of institution's own vehicles or airplanes as well as in-kind value of loaned or contributed transportation.
