In the 10 months that he was on the Rutgers campus, Brendan DeVera accumulated “over $2,000’’ in parking violations from the university’s transportation-services department, according to his attorney.

In an interview with NJ Advance Media, Ron Ricci offered a defense for why authorities charged DeVera as the ringleader of a credit-card fraud scheme that recruited seven other Rutgers football players last spring and allegedly resulted in $11,000 being stolen from victims.

“This is the first time he’s ever been in trouble,’’ Ricci said.
