Dick Vitale begged then-Rutgers athletics director Fred Gruninger to hire him as men's basketball coach and cried on an airplane when it didn't work out.
That's just one of the remarkable anecdotes Rutgers fans will hear at 9 p.m. Monday when Big Ten Network debuts the one-hour documentary "Big Ten Elite: 1976 Rutgers Basketball" dedicated to the greatest season in program history.
"I said to him," Vitale told BTN as seen in a preview clip, "Mr. Gruninger, I want the job so bad I'll tell you what I'll do: I'll take it with the same amount of money I'm making now.
