Even on the night that C. Vivian Stringer joined the most exclusive club in college basketball, the moment wasn't about the big round number that everyone came to celebrate.
The 1,000th win? Sure, that was a milestone that deserved a special night like this at the Rutgers Athletics Center, with the governor, the national media and many of her fellow coaches in the building. This is, after all, a level that so many of the greatest coaches in her sport's long history never even approached, much less reached.
But Stringer would have preferred to honor the hundreds of former players whose lives she touched during this 47-year journey.
