Rutgers has never appeared in the Big Ten baseball tournament.
It’s early, but this year’s Scarlet Knights club might have a shot to qualify for the eight-team tourney.
Rutgers will open its conference schedule Friday at Bainton Field in the opener of a three-game series against Penn State. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m., with 1 p.m. starts scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. The Scarlet Knights enter the series at 11-7, their first winning record to begin league play since 2005, and were No. 65 in the NCAA's most-recent RPI rating.
Rutgers went 6-1 on its spring break trip, including a series win at nationally-ranked Florida Gulf Coast, and has won nine of its last 12 games behind a lineup that is averaging 7.
