PISCATAWAY – Sam Bergen never considered anything other than petitioning the NCAA for a sixth year of eligibility with the Rutgers football team, but apparently he didn’t let his teammates in on the plan.
“I didn’t know he was coming back until we got back in a team meeting and I was like, ‘What are you doing here?’ ” said wide receiver Leonte Carroo, whose assigned seat is next to Bergen’s. “He is definitely a great guy to have on the team. An older guy, a leader who has been playing here for a long time.”
The fullback is the fourth Scarlet Knight since 2001 to have a six-year career, joining offensive lineman Brian Duffy, linebacker Edmund Laryea and defensive back Mason Robinson.
