Sunday’s match between Japan and the United States in the FIFA Women’s World Cup final marks the third time in four years that the teams have gone head to head for a gold medal.

In the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup final, Japan ousted the USA in penalty kicks, earning the team’s first World Cup title in the process. The squads faced off again the following year in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, but in that meeting it was team USA that took home the gold.

Both teams stand a chance to make history with a win: Japan would achieve back-to-back gold medals for the first time in the country’s history, while the United States can be the first country to win three Women’s World Cup titles.
