Without question, preseason football is just as much of a mental exercise as it is a physical one. NFL head coaches don’t generally want to show all of their cards during preseason for strategic reasons, which is why viewers who tune in for preseason games frequently get only a small taste of what starting players will bring to the field when it counts. However, an argument can be made about the mental advantage coaches may gain if they’re willing to take a risk and put their cards out there, especially in situations where they feel other teams in their division or conference have already counted them out.
