BRISTOL, TN — The much-hyped Tennessee-Virginia Tech football game scheduled for famed Bristol Motor Speedway was marred tonight when an out of control Tony Stewart ran over several dozen Hokies players at high speed. The incident shocked the capacity crowd, as the facility was set up for football and it was unclear why Stewart was in his car or driving at more than 100 mph through the sideline area.
Play was halted as medical personnel filled the scene, while Stewart continued to take high-speed laps, scattering players on both teams who ran to midfield for safety. Only after taking 10 more laps, several times re-hitting players and coaches he had already struck before, and then backing over a Tech cheerleader, did Stewart stop his car and climb out.
