Race plays a huge role in the lives of literally every single person living in America today. That fact is undeniable and cannot be argued, lest you want to get into a discussion about how oblivious you are to your white privilege, which I’ll be glad to do over Twitter. (Get at me here.) Does race inform everything we do? Of course not. Does it inform every opinion we have? Of course not. Does it influence some of our opinions — even for the most ambitiously fair-minded of us? Yes, yes and yes.
Race is the elephant in the room, and as much as we’d all like to pretend like it’s not a determining factor in the trajectories of our lives, it is.
