Yes, the new Coastal Plain League collegiate summer baseball league team in Savannah, GA, is the Savannah Bananas, but no, they have nothing to do with the New York Mets.
The Savannah Sand Gnats were a Mets-affiliated South Atlantic League Single-A team, but they left town in 2014 and became the Columbia Fireflies. The CPL is not a part of Minor League Baseball, it’s a separate deal entirely.
So with no baseball in Savannah, the CPL came knocking, seeing that Grayson Stadium was vacant. And the new ownership held a contest for fans to chose a name for their team, and the five finalists were PartyAnimals, Seagulls, Ports, Bananas and Anchors.
