Yes, Star Trek debuted on Sept. 8, 1966 — bringing us close to its 50th anniversary (do you have your Trekkie pants party planned?). Unconventional and boundary challenging, the original series teetered in the ratings and was only saved for a third and final season through a fan letter-writing campaign.

It eventually returned in many forms — several TV series, a collection of movies, a Saturday morning cartoon and of course my lunchbox (please, I’m not taking questions at this time). From SciFi curio to iconic institution, Star Trek is now stronger than ever.
