McClendon's car struck a bridge, according to local reports ... and he died at the scene.
The car appeared to have exploded on impact and burned up. The fire dept. was called to the scene.
The timing is bizarre considering the 56-year-old was charged with conspiracy in an alleged oil and gas scheme. McClendon had publicly denied any wrongdoing.
