On a beautiful Monday Independence Day morning, Kevin Durant announced via the Players Tribune that he will be leaving Oklahoma City to join Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors. Then NBA Twitter promptly went totally off the rails.
The overreaction to Durant’s decision to leave his longtime team to pursue a different avenue to a Championship should come as no surprise to anyone, as the criticism is highly reminiscent of the reaction that Lebron James received back in 2010 when he left the Cavaliers to join the Miami Heat.
The fact of the matter is that many NBA fans, and even some former players, still maintain a perception of the NBA as a place where every team has one superstar, despite the fact that the league has not been like that for a very long time; if it ever was at all.
