Shapovalov was trailing Great Britain’s Kyle Edmund 6-3 6-4 2-1 when he struck the ball in anger and the missile connected with umpire Arnaud Gabas — right in the face. That defaulted the match and gave the win to Brits, 3-2.
In addition, Shapovalov was fined $7,000 — $2,000 for the default and $5,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct. If it had been deemed intentional, the fine would be $12,000.
