Fried spent three weeks on the IL with a right hamstring strain, but he will be back on the mound Wednesday vs. the Nationals. He suffered the injury while attempting to advance from second base to third base on a wild pitch, providing just one more reason why the National League needs the designated hitter. Fried was the aces of the Braves’ staff last season, pitching to a 2.25 ERA, so the fact that he got hurt while running the bases doesn’t seem particularly fair.

Unsurprisingly, he will be limited in his first start back. He’s expected to throw between 75 and 80 pitches, which could take him into the fifth inning if he’s economical.
