Johnson, a second-round draft pick in the 2018 draft, played 34 games for the Lions, running for 1,225 yards and eight touchdowns. Last season, he started in two games, running for 181 yards and two touchdowns.
He appeared to lose his starting role to rookie D’Andre Swift, who started 13 games for the Lions, rushing for 521 yards and eight touchdowns. Swift was second in market share of carries at 38.26%, behind veteran Adrian Peterson, who was responsible for 42.
