In the ongoing New York civil war of hockey, Rangers fans routinely chant “Potvin (Stinks)” at all of their home games, apparently still upset over the incident in 1979, in which the target of the verbal assault, Denis Potvin, a member of the rival New York Islanders, laid down a hard hit that injured Rangers forward Ulf Nilsson. Shortly afterwards, the Islanders began their streak of four consecutive Stanley Cup wins, while the Rangers struggled to recover. The chant has become a staple at Madison Square Garden, to the point the Garden’s organist has been forced to stop playing the tune “Let’s Go Band”, though fans have made due with powerful whistling since.
