Rodolfo Guzmán Huerta, better known as El Santo (the Saint) was the most famous of the Mexican luchadores, or masked Mexican wrestlers. The heyday of his nearly 50-year career came in the 1960s and ’70s, when he also starred in a series of movies, TV shows and comic books that made him the country’s foremost real-life superhero.
On the occasion of what would have been El Santo’s 99th birthday, Google is honoring the wrestling icon today with a slideshow doodle which depicts key moments in his career.
Like all luchadores, El Santo wore a mask — but Huerta was uncommonly dedicated to keeping his secret identity.
