The 1983 Nebraska Cornhuskers were one of the greatest college football teams of all time, led by Heisman winning RB Mike Rozier and QB Turner Gill. Miami (FL), though formidable, was a 10-point underdog.
But the ‘Canes blocked a field goal on Nebraska’s first drive and stormed out to a 17-0 lead after the first quarter. The Huskers would close the gap to 17-14 at half, but Miami once again started the next half strong, building a 31-17 lead entering the fourth.
Tom Osborne’s team found the endzone on a 4th-and-8 pitch from Gill to Jeff Smith with 48 seconds left and came within an extra point of a tie and a likely national championship.
