Amherst College in Massachusetts is know for two things to me — they invented college baseball (first game July 1, 1859 vs. Williams College) and ultimate Frisbee (1965). But in all this time they’ve never had an official sports mascot.
Established in 1821, they’ve been known as the Jeffs — as in Lord Jeffery Amherst, a British general in the French and Indian War for whom the town is named. But nearly 200 years later that’s changed. Lord Amherst has been unceremoniously dumped by a vote of students, faculty and alumni, mainly because he advocated wiping out Indian tribes by giving them smallpox blankets.
