RIO DE JANEIRO — The inventor of the butterfly stroke, the swimming style that requires the swimmer to repeatedly flail up and out of the water and then slam back into the pool with his or face, admitted today what has long been expected by many in the swimming community: that the stroke was all a prank to make swimmers look stupid and fill their noses with water.
First swum in 1933, the inventor of the butterfly stroke says he came up with it as a way to mess with his swimmers when he worked as a coach at the age 0f 20.
