When opening a restaurant which will serve cuisine that happens to be outside your cultural background, it’s probably a good idea to steer clear of any potential decisions that might, ya know, make it seem like your clowning on that culture. But former University of Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron favored a bolder approach with his new Tuscaloosa sushi spot. Any publicity is good publicity, right? Maybe?
He’s named it “AJian Sushi,” which, of course, is a poorly conceived pun on racial nomenclature. Seriously, though — no one calls it “Asian” sushi, so the fact that he felt compelled to shoehorn this corny/offensive pun into the store’s frontage should tell you everything you need to know about how clueless the place’s owners are.
