Utah Valley’s Mark Pope expected to replace Dave Rose as BYU’s next men’s basketball coach

Former BYU assistant Mark Pope, Utah Valley’s head coach the past four seasons, will be announced soon as BYU’s new coach, according to several sources familiar with the selection process.

As of 10 a.m. Wednesday, BYU had not confirmed the hiring or called a news conference to make a coaching announcement.

Pope got the job over a fairly shallow candidate pool that included BYU interim coach Quincy Lewis, Los Angeles Lakers assistant Mark Madsen and Portland State coach Barret Peery. Sources say BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe and deputy athletic director Brian Santiago interviewed nearly a dozen candidates before focusing on Pope last week.
