A 14-year-old boy died Sunday afternoon after authorities say he was accidentally shot and killed while riding in a car with his family near target shooters in a remote area in northern Utah.
The boy was sitting in the back seat of the vehicle as his father drove their family in the Monte Cristo area, according to the Rich County Sheriff’s Office, when he was struck in the head by a bullet fired at a target several hundred feet away.
The target shooters later told police that they did not know there was a road down range, the sheriff’s office said in a news release, and did not see the vehicle on the road because of thick brush and trees in the area.
