The medical cannabis bill that could replace Proposition 2 cleared the Utah House of Representatives after more than two hours of debate during Monday’s special session.
The 60-13 vote largely broke down on party lines, with House Democrats arguing that the Legislature should not override voters who endorsed the ballot initiative in last month’s election.
The legislation now heads to the Utah Senate for consideration. It has already secured more than two-thirds support in the House, and if it meets the same threshold in the Senate, it could take effect as soon as the governor signs it.
