Draper • A Utah National Guard member was killed and 11 others were injured Wednesday while they were clearing a booby trapped building that exploded during a mission battling Islamic State loyalists in eastern Afghanistan, Gov. Gary Herbert said Thursday.
During a news conference at the Utah National Guard headquarters in Draper, Herbert said the Department of Defense would be releasing the names of the Guard members after notification of all family members. Herbert said the names would not be released until this Thursday evening at the earliest.
He said the 12-member Utah National Guard team was made of nine Utahns and three members from other states who are based in Utah.
