Real Salt Lake embarrassed by expansion LAFC in home opener, 5-1

The hosts scored first, with Joao Plata collecting a rebound off his own penalty kick, which was knocked away by LAFC goalkeeper Tyler Miller. Plata drilled the second chance the other way. But after that goal in the 20th minute, RSL’s back line was carved to pieces.

Leading up to LAFC’s equalizer, Benny Feilhaber received the ball from Mark-Anthony Kaye on the left side and made one more pass to complete a crossfield switch. On Marco Ureña’s first touch, winger Diego Rossi took off, darting behind RSL left back Demar Phillips. Ureña placed a hard pass out of Phillips’ reach and Rossi ran onto it, slipping his shot past a diving Nick Rimando.
