SANDY, Utah (Tuesday, July 3, 2018) – Real Salt Lake (7-8-2, 23 pts., 5th West) continues its 14th Major League Soccer season on Wednesday, July 4 at its Rio Tinto Stadium home, celebrating Independence Day with a post-game fireworks show following an 8:00 p.m. MT kickoff against rival Sporting Kansas City (9-3-5, 32 pts., t-1st West). RSL owns a 2-1-6 W-L-T record at Rio Tinto Stadium when celebrating Independence Day, and a 2-2-9 overall mark in its 13 previous early July fireworks games.
RSL Head Coach Mike Petke’s team – nine points ahead of last year’s pace, ahead of a second-half run that saw the team eliminated from playoff contention on the final day – kicks off a stretch that sees RSL play four of its next five (and six of its next eight overall) at home in Sandy, where the Claret-and-Cobalt own a seven-game home unbeaten run and boast a 6-1-1 record so far this MLS season, outscoring opponents 14-5 since an opening-day loss to LAFC.
