Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, stepped up his rhetoric toward President Donald Trump on Friday, writing in a tweet that it ‘strains credulity’ for Trump to argue that his calls for foreign nations to investigate a top Democratic rival are not politically motivated.
Trump, already facing a House impeachment inquiry over his conversations with the president of Ukraine, added fuel to the fire on Thursday when he publicly called on China to launch an investigation into former vice president and current presidential candidate Joe Biden based on unsubstantiated allegations of corruption.
On Friday, Romney — who had already distanced himself from most Senate Republicans by calling Trump’s actions “troubling in the extreme” — questioned Trump’s motivations for singling out Biden for investigations in the midst of the Democratic Party’s nominating process for the 2020 election.
